Relationship
Frontier Marketing and GEO
GEO is an important capability inside Frontier Marketing, and Frontier Marketing is not a synonym for GEO.
What GEO is
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of improving how an organisation is represented in answers generated by language models and AI search systems.
GEO is a capability with a specific object: generated answers. It is one of several capabilities that contribute to retrievability, which is itself one of the seven layers of the Frontier Marketing framework.
The hierarchy
- Frontier Marketing โ the strategic discipline.
- Retrievability โ the layer concerned with being found, understood, distinguished and recommended.
- GEO โ one of the capabilities contributing to retrievability.
Reading the hierarchy in reverse produces the common error: treating Frontier Marketing as an elaborate name for GEO. GEO cannot answer what the organisation should be strategically, what makes it non-substitutable, or how its go-to-market capability compounds.
What GEO interacts with
GEO does not operate alone. It depends on entity architecture for disambiguation, on content for quotable statements, on structured data for machine-readable relationships, on citations and authority for corroboration, and on technical crawlability for access. A GEO programme built on an incoherent entity layer optimises the presentation of an organisation that systems cannot reliably identify.
No GEO technique guarantees that a model will cite or recommend an organisation. The honest objective is to make correct representation more likely and misrepresentation less likely.
Example
GEOrgina is an experimental agent in the GEO area developed by Gotoclient. It is referenced here as an example of applied work in this capability; see its website for its current described functionality.
