The ten principles in full

The numbers above link to the original principles. Open one to read its complete definition.

  1. 01Intermediation transforms

LLMs and agents progressively assume parts of finding, interpreting, comparing and recommending.

Frontier Marketing designs for these new intermediaries as part of the market itself. Brands need to be understandable, retrievable and comparable by both people and machines. Influence increasingly depends on how systems interpret an organisation, its offer and its relevance. Marketing therefore extends beyond reaching audiences to shaping how decisions are mediated.

  2. 02AI changes the structure

Agentic AI changes how marketing work is organised, executed and connected.

Frontier Marketing treats AI as part of the operating model. Agents can research, create, analyse, coordinate and act across functions, turning workflows into systems that operate continuously. This shifts the focus from adding AI to individual tasks toward redesigning how marketing itself works.

Human–agent teams will become a core part of marketing organisations and reshape how marketing is led and operated. Building effective hybrid teams will increase organisational resilience, combining human judgement and strategic direction.

  3. 03Strategy precedes tactics

In a rapidly changing environment, tactics age very quickly. Strategy becomes the durable layer that gives direction across changing channels, technologies and behaviours.

Frontier Marketing gives strategy renewed importance: positioning, value proposition, priorities and choices provide the foundation from which new tactics can be explored continuously. The more unstable the environment becomes, the more valuable a strong strategic core becomes.

  4. 04Strategy is a recovered discipline

Frontier Marketing restores strategy as a rigorous discipline built on choices, trade-offs and judgement. Strategic education becomes essential again, because durable advantage depends on a deeper understanding of markets, value, positioning, and direction.

As human–agent teams develop, organisations will need to place particular emphasis on the human side of strategy, strengthening strategic thinking and judgement as core capabilities. As tactical cycles accelerate and execution becomes increasingly agentic, intellectual rigour becomes one of the most durable human capabilities in marketing.

  5. 05Differentiation becomes structural

As LLMs and agents become increasingly involved in comparison and recommendation, generic propositions become easier to overlook. Frontier Marketing places renewed importance on having a clear reason to exist: a distinctive value proposition, a precise fit with a buyer problem, or a capability that others cannot easily replicate. Over time, differentiation becomes one of the foundations that makes an organisation worth finding, understanding and choosing.

  6. 06Markets become entity systems

As agents increasingly search, compare, communicate and act on behalf of people and organisations, entities become a core layer of market visibility.

Frontier Marketing strengthens the signals that define an organisation and its relationships: who it serves, what problem it solves, why it is relevant, how it differs and when it should be considered. Companies, people, products, problems and categories gain meaning through these connections. A strong entity system helps both humans and machines understand when an organisation belongs in the decision.

  7. 07Meaning must be legible

Frontier Marketing treats clarity as infrastructure. An organisation must build their AI entities consistently and express who it is, who it serves, what problems it solves, what it offers and why it matters. That meaning must be easy for humans, search engines, LLMs, and agents to retrieve, interpret, and connect. The clearer the organisation is to these systems, the stronger its chances of being surfaced in the right context.

  8. 08The purpose is human

As technical capability expands, human value becomes more important to define with precision. Frontier Marketing asks what an organisation ultimately contributes to people: better decisions, better experiences, greater wellbeing, stronger relationships or meaningful progress. Technology expands what marketing can do; purpose determines what that capability should serve. Human relevance becomes the final measure of value.

Organisations must adopt clear human governance for increasingly autonomous systems. As a starting point, they can adapt Stuart Russell’s principles for human-compatible AI: systems should ultimately serve human preferences, remain uncertain about those preferences rather than treating predefined objectives as absolute, and learn from human behaviour and feedback.

This introduces an essential principle of machine humility: an AI system should operate on the assumption that it may not fully understand human intentions, preferences or context. It should therefore be designed to seek clarification, accept correction, defer to human judgement when appropriate and remain open to intervention. As autonomy increases, human governance should preserve this humility rather than allowing capability to be mistaken for authority.

  9. 09Relevance must be continuously earned

In an environment of continuous change, past authority offers limited protection. Frontier Marketing views relevance as a recurring task: observing how customer needs and technological possibilities evolve, testing new approaches, updating value propositions and continuously refreshing evidence. Organisations cannot rely on static brand equity; relevance must be renewed in every cycle.

  10. 10The frontier is continuous

Frontier Marketing is not a one-off transition to a new set of tools; it is an ongoing organisational state. The frontier will keep moving as new models, interfaces, behaviours, and economic dynamics emerge. Success belongs to organisations that institutionalise curiosity, learning speed and disciplined exploration as permanent capabilities.
